Tragedies top list of news stories that had biggest impact

The Tin Shui Wai family tragedy in which a mother tied up her two children and threw them out the window before leaping to her own death topped a list of news stories that had a huge impact on local students last year.

A total of 15,162 students took part in the Top 10 Life Lesson News Poll, organised by Yan Chai Hospital Wong Wha San Secondary School with the help of the Education Bureau. The survey, held at the end of each year, is aimed at enhancing students' respect for life and inspiring them through life-changing events that had taken place over the past 12 months.

The Tin Shui Wai incident was followed by another tragedy involving a 14-year-old girl whose newborn baby plummeted from her 24th-floor home in Yuen Long in December.

Twenty events were shortlisted in the questionnaire distributed to more than 30 schools. Other top-10 stories included a 11-year-old pupil committing suicide, a cancer patient, 21, dying as a result of a medical blunder, and a peace campaign remembering the 70th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre.
