Shipyard faces charges

SEMBAWANG Shipyard must appear in court on February 23 to face charges in connection with accidents on the Stolt Spur and the Indiana in 1992.

Six men were killed and 61 injured in a fire aboard the Stolt Spur and eight died and 14 others were injured four months later aboard the Indiana while both vessels were in the Sembawang Shipyard.

The shipyard was charged with industrial safety offences and faces a maximum fine of S$25,000 (about HK$122,000) if found guilty.

As a result of an inquiry that found shortcomings in Sembawang's safety system, the shipyard has already adopted the commission's recommendations.
