Sound bites

You recently won the Hong Kong Dance Awards 2008 for your performance in City Contemporary Dance Company's HerStory. Having trained in Chinese and traditional dance, how do you find the transition to contemporary dance and what do you enjoy most about this genre?

Dancer Yang Yizi:

'Contemporary dance is something totally new to me. But I don't find it too difficult because I never limit myself to any dance genre. Be it Chinese dance, traditional or contemporary dance, it's a learning process.

'These dance genres may look different to other people. But to me, there are no big differences.

'Unlike other arts media, dance is a body language. It's about body movement and rhythm. My Chinese dance technique gives me an advantage when interpreting contemporary dance, making me more versatile.

'I love the flexibility of contemporary dance. You can embrace any kind of dance form.

'Unlike ballet and Chinese dance, there is no restriction or standardised movement. Everyone can develop their own style.

'There is no right or wrong, good or bad. All you need is to believe in yourself.

'This is the most valuable inspiration that I get from contemporary dance.'
