Construction workers demand 10pc pay rise

Construction workers are calling for a 10 per cent pay rise to tackle rising inflation after bar benders reached a wage agreement with their employers. Confederation of Trade Unions general secretary Lee Cheuk-yan said he hoped employers would consider increasing wages for all construction workers before any industrial action was taken. These workers include carpenters, excavator operators, painters and general welders. According to the union, their wages have been frozen for four years. Construction Site Workers General Union vice-chairman Shek Lam-shang said construction labourers worked up to nine hours a day for between HK$500 to HK$700, with some getting just HK$200 a day.

Couple's bodies found in flat after suicide

A man and a woman were found dead in a flat in Sham Shui Po after an apparent suicide pact, police said. The pair, aged 48 and 44, lived in the flat at 60 Castle Peak Road near Yen Chau Street. Initial investigations showed that they could have been dead for three weeks. Signs of burned charcoal were found along with a suicide note saying the pair had been under immense pressure and had financial problems. Police were alerted by the landlord, who went to collect rent arrears.

Chek Lap Kok sees record flights again

Air traffic levels at Hong Kong International Airport hit a record high on Friday as demand soared for foreign and mainland holidays over Easter. Daily flight movements reached 945, up from Thursday's record high of 906 and 16.7 per cent higher than the daily average, according to Civil Aviation Department figures. The department had predicted a record of 900 flights on Friday. Most of the additional flights were to destinations in East Asia, with Taipei the most popular, followed by Fukushima and Okinawa.

Cold, windy week forecast

Cold and windy weather is set to prevail over the coming week as a cold front over inland Guangdong gradually moves southwards. Temperatures today will range between 16 degrees Celsius and 21 degrees, with moderate to fresh north to northeasterly winds gusting up to 40km/h, according to the Observatory.
