Yiu entry tests positive

Trainer Ricky Yiu Poon-fie will return from the Magic Millions sales with a 'please explain' from stewards regarding a positive steroid test for recent acquisition Rely On Me.

The gelding, who was transferred to Yiu's yard on February 29, was discovered yesterday morning by Yiu's assistant, Edwin Wong Sau-fung, to have been treated on March 6 with Sustanon, a testosterone supplement that is usually used by bodybuilders.

The routine pre-race screening for runners at the Sha Tin meeting did not include tests for testosterone, but chief steward Jamie Stier directed the Jockey Club's laboratory to test Rely On Me for the steroid immediately and results were returned by race three.

When the laboratory confirmed Rely On Me to have a testosterone reading above the naturally occurring levels allowed, stewards ordered the horse be scratched from yesterday's sixth event and further samples be taken.

The matter has now been adjourned until the results of those tests are known, Yiu returns and an inquiry can be undertaken.
