Business as usual, on and off the pitch
InvestHK's associate director-general Mark Michelson can't match his boss Mike Rowse for Sevens attendances, but he's chalking up some impressive numbers - in the name of networking.
'I missed one year, but have attended a total of 27 Sevens,' says Michelson (pictured). Rowse had a 100 per cent record of 33.
'I remember when Australia used to win, and I thought the Ella brothers were sensational. Famous New Zealander Eric Rush was a dream to watch on the pitch for his speed and agility, as was Australian David Campese,' Michelson adds.
'But my favourite player is Waisale Serevi. His combination of skill, passion and flair is unmatched. I remember Hong Kong winning the plate in 1990 and 1992 and the Bowl five times. It has been wonderful to witness our home-grown team emerge. I credit the Sevens with showing some great rugby over the years, as well as being an excellent forum for business.
'The Sevens is an integral part of Hong Kong. I don't believe that there's any event where you get so many key players off the pitch together for networking. There's nothing on the planet like it.
'The level and number of senior executives who fly in for the Sevens never ceases to astound me. The camaraderie makes it easy for everyone to talk and build business relationships. This year, we have been overwhelmed by the response from the guests, mostly potential investors from overseas.'
