Tietjens sees the bigger picture

So was the vintage of 2001 better than 2008? Gordon Tietjens smiles and goes off on a tangent. He was coach of both successful teams, but he does not want to compare the class of 2001 led by Karl Tenana and the current crop captained by DJ Forbes because he says it is far too difficult. 'The 2001 side was very good and had some good players. And so does this current side. The 2001 side did win the Hong Kong Sevens in style, hopefully this side will also do that, but the bigger picture is to win the IRB Sevens series,' says Tietjens. That result can be sealed today if New Zealand win the Cup. Forbes and company would then also have laid strong claims to being the best sevens team to come from the Land of the Long White Cloud. But Tietjens refuses to speculate. 'It is hard to compare the two teams because the game has evolved a lot,' he said.
