Local environmental group Earth Rescue Team is calling for schools to join a newspaper recycling competition in an effort to encourage students to take care of and learn about the environment.

The group is now recruiting secondary and primary schools. The competition begins this month and runs until July.

Earth Rescue Team will collect newspapers at each participating school every day and record how much newspaper the school recycles. The 10 schools recycling the most newspapers in terms of weight per student per day in every district will be awarded.

'We encourage students to read newspapers, and after that recycle the paper. They can learn liberal studies and take part in protecting the environment,' said Peter Lee Wan-ho, art director of the Earth Rescue Team.

'Students in Hong Kong know how to conserve energy such as switching of lights when not in use. But they have not yet realised the pollution caused by consumer behaviour. There are carts of rubbish left after lunch every day at each school. We hope the project will raise awareness in this respect.'
