One of President Hu Jintao's closest allies has been promoted to the position of deputy party chief of Hebei province as part of the latest reshuffle of the central and provincial leadership.

Hu Chunhua , who was previously first secretary of the Secretariat of the Chinese Youth League - the power base of President Hu - is also likely to become provincial governor.

He took over from Guo Gengmao , who 'will be assigned to another post shortly', Xinhua said.

The 45-year-old Mr Hu is one of the youngest senior party officials in the country, and is widely considered a leading candidate for the party leadership in a decade.

Separately, Wuhan , the capital city of the central province of Hubei , installed a new party chief yesterday after Miao Pu moved to Beijing in the recent cabinet reshuffle.

Yang Song , the 58-year-old former deputy party chief whose policy portfolio was agriculture, was promoted after Mr Miao's appointment as one of the seven vice-ministers of the new Ministry of Industry and Information.
