Boy, what a relief! The best sex lasts just seven to 13 minutes, not counting foreplay. This, at least, is according to a new study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. Less than three minutes is, shall we say, less than desirable, but it should not go on and on either, as some urban myths suggest, says Eric Corty, associate professor of clinical psychology at Pennsylvania State University and co-author of the study.

'Many sex therapists consider coitus that lasts as little as three minutes to be of adequate length,' they wrote in the study, which surveyed 33 professional sex therapists and obtained a consensus time for ratings of adequate sex, desirable, way too short and too long. Their conclusions?

Too short: 1.25 minutes

Adequate: 4.91 minutes

Desirable: 8 minutes

Too long: 19.96 minutes
