The Black Dollars

Who's behind it? In 2000, Q. Nakao from Osaka, in Japan, and Russell Grimley from Birmingham, Britain, met in London. After working for a fashion designer for almost four years, the pair toyed with the idea of forming a rock band, which, if it had come into being, they would have named The Black Dollars. The band idea fizzled out and in its place, in 2005, came a men's clothing line. Now based in Tokyo, it has become a hit for its streetwear and rock 'n' roll vibe.

Why we love it? Never taking themselves too seriously, the duo create clothing that reflects their quirky sense of humour.

As rock-star wannabes, leather garments are usually the focal point of their collections.

What we'd pick: for the spring/summer season, the designers went with a 1950s take on rock 'n' roll, with a petrol-station-attendant-inspired shirt (below centre; HK$1,900). They have also created humorous tees, such as a black and white printed version bearing the slogan 'Duck Walk' (below right; HK$900) - referencing the guitar move made famous by Chuck Berry. They also threw in some ethnic-inspired pieces such as a black hoodie (below left; HK$3,500) embroidered with a South American tribal print.

Where can I buy it? The Black Dollars is available at Lane Crawford's Times Square and Canton Road locations, tel: 2118 3638.
