Each week we talk to HK's brightest and best

Name Lawrence Chu Ka-ming

School Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education

Sport Rowing

Achievements Chu, 19, won a bronze medal in the junior men's double sculls at the 13th Asian Junior Rowing Championships last October.

The achievement earned him a Hong Kong Sports Institute Outstanding Junior Athlete Award.

He also won bronze medals at the 11th and 12th Asian Junior Rowing Championships, and came 23rd at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Beijing last year.

Soundbite 'I started rowing in 2002. At that time, I saw a video clip about rowing in the sea under bright sunlight. I thought it was cool and interesting so I signed up for a training course,' Chu said.

'In reality, I practise on the Shing Mun River and rarely have the chance to row in the sea, but I still love it very much.

'The speed and power of the sport makes me feel good, and taking part in competition gives me great satisfaction.

'Rowing is very challenging. It is easy to pick up but difficult to master. It wasn't hard for me to get moving in the water, but it took a long time to perfect my movements and increase speed.'

From his coach 'Lawrence is a very devoted athlete, whether he is practising or in competition,' said coach Chiang Yun-kuen.

'He spends a lot of time on his rowing and trains very hard.

'I'm glad that he takes the sport seriously.'

Ambitions 'I'm 19 now so I have to take part in the senior events instead of rowing with the juniors,' Chu said.

'I hope to adapt to the training soon and narrow the gap between my strength and that of the seniors.

'My main ambition at the moment is to represent Hong Kong at the East Asian Games in 2009.'
