The recently concluded Architecture Biennial at the Central Police Station presented many displays that were, unfortunately, merely advertising

for the work of architects and architectural firms that mounted them; it was the beautiful simplicity of the complex's architecture that was the star attraction. In response to the biennial's pomposity, Hong Kong Anarchitecture Bananas: Artists Who Reclaim Space is a carefully curated group exhibition that tackles ideas about the use of public and private space.

A fascinating array of media is included and Li Loi-yau's Woodwork Studio (above right) is a realistic miniature model that crosses the boundary of craft into the realms of art because it depicts not only a furniture maker's studio but pushes the viewer's understanding of spatial use and the unconscious but careful placement of objects within a space.

Likewise, Suki Chan's small, black grouped housing blocks have a similar effect: the viewer towers above the installation and sees the laid-out buildings to decipher the topology.

Tozer Pak's video A Zebra for 5 Persons shows five people crossing and recrossing a Hong Kong pedestrian crossing from different angles - this simple repeated action is both silly and oddly compelling as the shadows of the participants and passing traffic add a third dimension to the flatly filmed scene.

Co-curator Michael Lee also produces a well-researched bilingual publication packed with useful information for each show he organises.
