Sprechen Sie Deutsch? No matter, this comedy act won't get lost in translation

Germans are known for their cars, engineering, great coffee makers, efficiency, beer ... their sense of humour? Not so much. But being half-German, I'm quite happy to chuck that stereotype and welcome Hong Kong's first visiting German comedian, who's apparently a favourite of the comedy-club scene in Europe.

Wenn Sie lachen, ist es Oschmann - 'Laugh your heart out, it's Oschmann' - hits the InterContinental Grand Stanford tomorrow evening and on Friday evening. Oschmann, who apparently lost his first name when he laughed too much one day, does skits and stage humour that translate well for an international audience.

The hotel's director of communications, Tina Di Cicco, said: 'Traditionally we hold a lot of German events and have been involved with the German community here, which numbers upwards of 50,000. While the comedy is in German, it works for non-speakers because his humour is pretty universal, as he works a lot with hand and facial expressions.'

These days, comedy is a household thing in Germany, says the hotel's press release, rather bizarrely. Before it was only for rich people?
