Wang and Yip make it to last eight

Hong Kong's Wang Chen and Yip Pui-yin both reached the quarter-finals in the women's singles at the Asia championships in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, yesterday. World number five Wang, the number one seed after a last-minute withdrawal of all four top-ranked Chinese players, had little difficulty routing Chiang Pei-hsing of Taiwan 21-11, 21-10. She will now meet Japan's Kaori Imabeppu for a place in the semis. Yip, who needs to consolidate her Olympic spot with a good result in Johor Bahru, also went through easily. The third seed beat Fu Mingtian of Singapore 21-17, 21-17. Her next opponent will be Japan's Yu Hirayama.
