Sixty guardians volunteer to keep flame away from trouble
More than 60 people have volunteered to be Olympic flame guardians for the May 2 relay. The volunteers are headed by Anderson Cheung Sze-chun, an assistant to Wong Tai Sin district councillor Maggie Chan Man-ki, who is recruiting more people online to join Mr Cheung in contributing to a smooth passage for the torch relay.
Mr Cheung, 26, came up with the idea after watching the relay being disrupted overseas.
'I talked to some friends, and we all believed political issues should be separated from sport,' said Mr Cheung. 'We are not professional guardians, but we do want to show our support for a peaceful torch relay.'
More than 60 people, mostly students and office workers, had contacted him over the past week and there would be 150 volunteer guardians at the most, he said. Mr Cheung said they planned to take part at Tsim Sha Tsui, Sha Tin and Hong Kong Island.
