Retired sports anchor Ng Fong-wing died  at Princess Margaret Hospital last night from leukaemia,   aged 67.
Ng was famous for his witty three-minute sports round-up at the tail end of TVB's main news broadcast, which he left  in 2005, capping more than 40 years of sports reporting.
But he continued to work with the TV station on other sports programming such as the 2005 East Asian Games, the 2006 World Cup soccer finals in Germany and shows last year related to the Beijing Olympic Games.
When not working, Ng spent most of his final years with his family or travelling.
He returned from Taiwan last week and was taken to hospital because of a fever. However, his situation deteriorated quickly, and according to a sports reporter who visited him on Wednesday, Ng was in a weakened state.
His son Ka-chun said his father had suffered from a lung infection due to pneumonia and had died  peacefully, adding he was proud to be his son and proud of his father's work.
Chu Hoi-kun, chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Association, said Ng's reporting style has inspired many new reporters and the association would try to help out Ng's family in whatever way needed.
Ng graduated from Form Five in 1960 and immediately joined the Hong Kong Standard as a sports reporter. He started working for TVB as a sports reporter and anchor in 1982, staying with the station until his retirement.
Ng's light-hearted reporting attracted many people to take in the sports news every evening at 6.50pm. Among his famous quotes were, 'Football is round' - you will never know the result of a football match until the 90th minute.
His son once told his father he had the best and easiest job in Hong Kong television - working only three minutes a day.
Ng pointed out that it took him 10 hours to prepare for his three-minute segment.
