Why bring contemporary dance to traditional bamboo stages for Chinese opera across town?

Choreographer Mandy Yim Ming-yin (below) of Y Space:

'The idea first came up 10 years ago. A temporary bamboo stage is where traditional Chinese operas are performed to celebrate Chinese festivals. We want to bring modern dance to the traditional stage to contrast modernity and traditions.

'We have invited artists from different media such as musicians, installation artists, graffiti artists and even BMX to perform in the programme. We'll stage a performance, The Key to Achieve Happiness, embracing elements of drama, music and dance.

'The theme of the programme is happiness, after a survey saying the happiness index of Hong Kong is declining. We hope we can bring and share happiness with our audience.'

Makeshift Theatre Project, Tsing Yi Fung Shue Wo Rd football field (Apr 26-27); Cha Kwo Ling Rd (May 4); Crescent Garden, Wong Nai Chung, Happy Valley (May 11); and Sai Kung Po Tung Rd (May 27), free admission. Inquiries: 2470 0511/2268 7321
