Despite rents going up and up, new restaurants are taking the plunge to see if what they have will interest people. In this issue, we highlight 10 hot new kitchens with sophisticated Japanese eateries represented by Yokoro and Megu. Then there is plenty of pasta as yet more Italian eateries open on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon.

Then there's the fusion of Italian and Japanese that is D Diamond. The jury is still out on that one, but go try it for yourselves.

Among the restaurants generally in this issue are several in hotels. While previously hotel food would have been for those staying in the rooms, and provided somewhat predictable buffet fare, increasingly hotels are coming up with original standalone restaurants to entice customers not staying there.

Another new restaurant is the Watermark, taking advantage of the harbour lights at the new Star Ferry. There may be those who pine for the old one, but with any luck even if the architecture of the new one doesn't appeal to all, there will be more eateries providing restaurant-goers with an opportunity to dine while enjoying the harbour view.
