Taste for all seasons

Richard Watt

The Peak Lookout

121 Peak Road, The Peak, 28491000

Fare A diverse selection from Italian, Thai, Indian and Japanese to western.

Ambience Indoor or outdoor seating, with some tables offering panoramic views of Aberdeen. Indoors, the restaurant is decorated with old pictures, giving it a cosy, nostalgic feel.

Cost A three-course meal for two with a decent bottle of wine, about HK$1,500.

Who to bring Great venue for visiting friends and relatives who can take advantage of the attractions and views. The outdoor dining area can make a romantic setting for couples.

Turn-ons For oyster lovers, there is a great selection of eight types ranging in size and taste, and the staff are knowledgeable and happy to make recommendations. I asked for something small and salty, and the Kumamoto were just that, jet-fresh and still tasting of the sea. The spinach salad with pear and gorgonzola dressed in raspberry and poppy seed was unusual and the combination worked well, with a generous amount of gorgonzola. The asparagus, wrapped in bacon, that came with the duck breast was another novel item. Another plus was the variety of options on vegetables and sauces for main courses.

Turn-offs We waited far too long for our main courses. The medium-rare sirloin steak I ordered was verging on well-done. The roasted duck breast was too tough. First-time visitors to the restaurant may be disappointed that the view is of Aberdeen and not across Victoria Harbour.

Drinks Extensive wine list offers a wide selection. For the daring, there is even a choice from China. Prices cover a considerable range so will appeal to all budgets.
