TOP DECK AT THE JUMBO

Top floor, Jumbo Kingdom, Shum Wan Pier Drive, Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen, 25523331

Fare International, ranging from sushi and sashimi, Asian curries and tandoori to salads, pastas, pizzas, grilled steaks, fresh oysters and burgers.

Ambience One of the best reasons for coming here. The area on top of the Chinese imperial-style Jumbo Kingdom was once reserved for special functions, but the folks from Cafe Deco have made it into another landmark dining destination. The architectural style is consistent with the rest of Jumbo Kingdom, albeit in darker tones and less garish. But the real draw is the surrounding outdoor terrace, which offers views of Shum Wan and Aberdeen Harbour. The giant neon Jumbo sign lights up the terrace and adds a surreal feel.

Cost Typical destination dining prices; at least HK$400 to HK$600 without wine.

Who to bring People you'd like to get away with, to spend half a day chilling out with over food and wine. Maybe not kids though, as there's water over the not-so-high fence.

Turn-ons The ambience is the runaway No 1 attraction here, followed by the eclectic menu and extensive wine list. The food is generally reliable. The blue fin tuna carpaccio with rucola salad, Parmigiano and extra virgin olive oil, with all ingredients in good quality and well portioned, is recommended. The signature red cocktail sauce that is served with fresh oysters and a seafood mountain (which includes Boston lobster, US and Australian rock oysters, Holland black mussels, Australian yabbies, Alaskan king crab legs, sea whelks and South China Sea prawns, starting from HK$608 for two) is famously delicious, with just the right tartness and kick. So few places in Hong Kong make a proper red cocktail sauce. The tandoori has the right depth in flavour and the right spice level.

Turn-offs The seafood in the sushi rolls is often soggy, probably because they travel too long from the kitchen to the table. And it's worse when the weather is humid and you're sitting outside. But if you go for the other varieties it's safe.

Drinks A well-balanced wine list with 15 by-the-glass options and many more by the bottle, in addition to a full bar menu.
