Based in the music-rich city of Gothenburg in Sweden, Little Dragon blend jazz, R&B and blues to create a unique sound - quirky, sparse and dreamlike but full of funk.
The group of four high school friends had been performing at informal shows for years before releasing their first single Twice/Test last year. With lead singer Yukimi Nagano's unique voice, the band started to gain recognition on the indie music market. Months later the band released their debut album, Little Dragon.
Little Dragon opens with Twice, a soulful, haunting love ballad featuring moody piano chords and Yukimi's gorgeous vocals.
Heavy drum beats and a sliding bass line dominate the funky second track Turn Left. The bouncy beats carry through to No Love, Recommendation, Constant Surprises and Forever. All are well produced and distinctive.
The album falls a little flat in the second half, but the last few tracks bring it alive again. Test is insanely catchy, and Scribbled Paper is an epic-like track and the best way to end the album.
Little Dragon is original and creative - it's what music is all about.
