Hundreds of former Oasis staff yesterday flocked to a career fair where more than 1,800 aviation jobs were on offer.

The recruitment drive by a labour union in To Kwa Wan comes after almost 700 Oasis Hong Kong Airlines workers were sacked on Friday of last week when the company's provisional liquidator, accounting firm KPMG, ran out of funds.

Job fair co-organiser Ip Wai-ming, the deputy general secretary of the Staffs and Workers Union of Hong Kong Civil Airlines, affiliated with the Federation of Trade Unions, said: 'I am confident the market can hire most of the axed Oasis staff as the aviation industry is expanding.'

But he said the new jobs would probably pay less.

'Oasis paid roughly HK$3,000 to HK$4,000 more than other airlines for most positions,' he said. 'They may not be able to find a job with similar pay at other companies.'

The jobs were being offered by 12 aviation companies and included positions for flight attendants, pilots, ground attendants, heliport supervisors, technicians, customer services officers and finance managers.

Mr Ip said the average monthly salary for most of the jobs on offer was about HK$15,000, excluding pilots' pay.
