Gargyle

Where? Gargyle is in an area of Brooklyn known as Dumbo (an acronym for 'down under the Manhattan bridge overpass'), a beautiful waterfront neighbourhood with cobblestone streets, industrial loft buildings and an expansive view of Manhattan.

The neighbourhood is both home and workplace to many creative types.

Who? Gargyle was opened last year by Nhung Nguyen and her husband, Don Vu. Despite having no previous retail experience, the pair are fashion fanatics and have many connections in the industry.

Fashion finds: get your fill of hip, contemporary labels from around the world such as United Bamboo, Mjolk, Lorick, Corpus, Fred Perry, Rachel Comey, YMC and Obedient Sons, to name a few. Accessories, footwear and jewellery come courtesy of brands such as Common Projects, Eley Kishimoto, Peter Jensen, Umbro by Kim Jones and Giles and Brother Jewellery.

The vibe: the simple space is lined with racks of clothing and centrepieces overflowing with accessories such as hats, handbags and sunglasses. Shoes are displayed on towering stacks of boxes.

The crowd: the effortlessly yet perfectly dressed.

Extras: Gargyle has a comprehensive online boutique (www.gargyle.com) offering the visitor virtually everything that is carried in the store. The website ships internationally.

Gargyle is at unit 212, 147 Front Street, Brooklyn, New York, the United States, tel: 1 718 246 5813.
