If you're a fan of the supernatural anime xxxHOLIC, you'll be pleased to know the show has returned for a second season and is currently airing on Japanese television station TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System).
Things haven't changed much: high school student Watanuki Kimihiro is still in debt to Ichihara Yuuko, the witch who promises to free him from the curse of seeing spirits. He has to slave away, cooking and cleaning for her until she feels he's done enough to warrant her help.
All of the previous season's major characters are back. Among them is Watanuki's classmate, the aloof Shinto priest Domieki Shizuka whose demeanour constantly annoys Watanuki.
The girl of Watanuki's dreams, his classmate Kunogi Himawari, is still there, although some of the things Yuuko has said about her this season suggest a greater involvement later in the story.
xxxHOLIC looks into Japanese superstitions and beliefs, providing an interesting insight into this part of their culture. There are also some similarities to Chinese superstitions.
The prevailing message in this series, however, is a warning against messing with things that you have little understanding of.
This anime is based on the original manga works of Clamp, whose previous titles include Tokyo Babylon, Card captor Sakura and Tsubasa Chronicle. If you enjoyed those shows, you won't be disappointed with xxxHOLIC.
If you've yet to see it, the first season is now available in English from North American distributor Funimation. Grab a copy and catch up on Watanuki's trials and tribulations.
