Glimpse into a mechanical future

Technology has really advanced in the last hundred years and these days it plays a major role in our lives.

There was a time when we humans didn't even have a telephone and now about half the world uses mobiles, some of which are smaller than 10cm.

The day is not far off when everybody will have a personal robot as their servant.

People say that technology has advanced so much it will be difficult to achieve more.

But I say there is more to come.

There will come a day when machines will run the earth and we will run the machines. There will come a day in the next few hundred years when more than 90 per cent of human activities will be done by machines.

Humans are so dependent on computers and machines, we will enter the era of machines.

If the wizard had to wave his wand ...

Many adults think fairy tales are nonsense and would never happen in real life. They believe the wolf would swallow Little Red Riding Hood and Cinderella's step-sisters would fit her foot into the glass slipper.

However, they have forgotten that when they were small, they also believed fairy tales.

In a fairy tale, all the wicked people will learn their lesson and the good people will live happily ever after.

After reading such a delightful ending, children will believe justice really exists in the world. But adults will just be bored.

What makes their reaction so different?

When someone grows up, they have to face plenty of problems, which cruelly make them mature. Gradually they understand fairy tales are just fairy tales. They realise they might not make their dreams come true.

Adults tell you there're a lot of grey areas, instead of just black and white.

Children, on the other hand just absorb the innocent world of fairy tales and allow themselves to dream. That is why they are much happier than adults.

'Mirror mirror on the wall, who's the cleverest of them all?'

Students! Because they can make themselves happy with make-believe.

Luxuries don't define self-worth

These days many people equate money and possessions with self-worth. They have become the standard by which we judge others.

But is this the standard by which we should be judged? No.

Everyone is unique. It does not matter what we look like. We should not be ashamed of our appearance or if we do not have as much as other people.

Luxuries don't make us special. What makes us unique is our disposition. Sadly we have forgotten this.

We don't determine our own worthiness. It is determined by those around us. If we want to be more esteemed we can start by treating other people as we would like to be treated.

Carpe diem and live life to the fullest

We study and work very hard, trying to get ahead of others.

Do you think this is meaningful?

If I had to do it all again, I would concentrate on learning and experiencing as many new things as possible.

I would become involved in things like volunteer work and face the world without any doubts inside.

Trying new thing is very exciting. Teenagers should be exposed to a wide range of experiences, but there is no guarantee they will be successful.

If we don't reach our goal we should analyse the reason and make use of this information some other way.

Everyone should be positive and face their lives with high hopes.

Never give up.

Students get pressure from all

Nowadays, it's common for Hongkongers to experience negative emotions. These emotions sap people's energy.

This doesn't only happen to adults, but also to students. Teenagers in secondary school have a lot of pressure from their teachers and parents.

Teachers want students to perform well, in all spheres, not just academics. They want them to do well at sport and extra curricular activities, and know about current affairs. They get stressed if the student doesn't do well.

On the other hand, Hong Kong's adults are living in a fast-paced environment. People just cannot take a second for themselves, and if people live this way they will become stressed.

I think the government should do something about the stress in this city. If they don't, people will be miserable.

Brush up on English

If you want to enhance your English skills there are several things you can do.

First, reading more English newspaper is the key to expanding our vocabulary.

Second, watch more English programmes on TV. You can also watch the Chinese news report first, and then switch to the English report.

Third, take every chance you can to speak more English.

Time, most precious

If you have time, you can make money, but if you have all the money in the world, you cannot buy time.

So enjoy life while you still have the time. Follow your heart.
