Itazura na Kiss (TV series)

One of Japan's most famous unfinished manga has finally been made into an anime, nine years after the creator Tada Kaoru passed away.

Itazura na Kiss is a romantic high school comedy that centres around the ditzy Kotoko Aihara of class 3-F and Naoki Irie, Japan's number one student, of class 3-A.

The story begins with Kotoko finally plucking up the courage to confess her feelings for Naoki after having a crush on him for two years. She gives him a love letter but is publicly rejected when he says he doesn't like 'stupid' girls.

Completely humiliated, Kotoko gives up her dreams of marrying Naoki. That same day, her family's newly-built home is destroyed in an earthquake. However Mr Aihara's high school friend invites them to stay at his home - that friend just happens to be Naoki's father. This lets viewers in on the amazing rollercoaster ride of Kotoko and Naoki's relationship.

The manga was so popular that two live-action TV series were based on it in 1996 and 2005. The 2005 series was a Taiwanese production that starred Joe Cheng and Ariel Lin and became one of the highest-rated dramas of 2005.

The sequel to that series has just finished production and is being broadcast on Taiwanese television channel CTV (China Television) and GTV (Gala Television).

Sadly, the story's creator Kaoru died in 1999, aged only 38, when she hit her head on a table and fell into a coma, later dying from a cerebral haemorrhage.

The series that ran for eight years in anthology magazine Margaret continues to be published with the permission of the late artist's husband.
