Clinic treats protesters

FIFTY hunger strikers at the Tai A Chau Vietnamese detention centre were treated at the camp clinic yesterday on the eighth day of protests against plans to speed up the repatriation process.

The number of hunger strikers at the camp yesterday was officially put at 159, but more than 1,000 detainees have registered their intention to take part in hunger strikes.

Thousands more protesting peacefully at Whitehead and High Island camps against an agreement reached in Geneva this month to repatriate all asylum seekers before the end of 1995.

A government spokesman confirmed yesterday that some detainees at Whitehead had refused to take food issued by the camp management.

''But we cannot confirm whether they are taking their own food,'' he said.
