Racial discrimination is ignorance

There are many types of discrimination but racial discrimination hurts the most.

Racism was perhaps natural hundreds of years ago, when Europeans sailed to new countries and found new populations who they, with their limited experience of the world, believed to be inferior.

But there is no reason for it to exist in the 21st century.

There are many benefits to thinking positively about different ethnic groups. If we all made the effort to find out about different cultures, I believe there would be no more wars. World peace would prevail.

We should accept and respect people of different ethnic groups. If we do this, all of us can live together peacefully.

From the Editor

Thank you for your letter, Fahacl. In a cosmopolitan city like Hong Kong, it can sometimes be easy to forget how serious a problem racism is.

But racism rears its ugly head even in our multi-cultural city. Although we may not witness extreme violence or experience true segregation, people are frequently discriminated against for having a different skin colour, following a different religion or even eating a different kind of food.

There is no excuse for racial discrimination - it is only an excuse for ignorance. Only people who know nothing about another culture resort to racism.

Instead of mocking someone for being different, why not find out about those differences? You'll find that we're all essentially the same under our skin. Don't let ignorance stand in the way of learning about the world and people around you.
