Vice-President Xi Jinping is expected to pay his first visit since taking up the portfolio of overseeing Hong Kong affairs in November.
A source close to the central government said Mr Xi was likely to visit next month, when he would meet Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen and inspect facilities for the Olympic equestrian events.
He would also meet deputies to the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
It will be Mr Xi's first visit to Hong Kong since he officially succeeded Zeng Qinghong as Beijing's top official overseeing Hong Kong affairs.
Mr Xi has previously visited Hong Kong to promote economic ties when he worked in Fujian and Zhejiang . He has been governor of Fujian and party secretary for Zhejiang.
A veteran pro-Beijing politician said Mr Xi's visit had not been finalised as the vice-president, who also oversees preparations for the Olympic Games, might not be able to find time to visit Hong Kong next month. 'Another uncertainty is whether Mr Xi is ready for a trip to Hong Kong as the central leadership is preoccupied with relief efforts for Sichuan earthquake victims,' the politician said.
