Troubleshooters to head relief projects

Sichuan has appointed three new heads to its worst-hit earthquake zones - Deyang , Mianyang and the Tibetan and Qiang Minority Autonomous Prefecture of Aba - in a swift response to the province's biggest disaster in decades.

The trio will oversee relief work in the epicentre - Yingxiu, Beichuan , Mianzhu , Shifang , An county, Pingwu county and Jiangyou .

Authorities also clarified that the new appointments were normal transfers and no major cadre had been sacked for dereliction of duty.

In Aba, former deputy chief Wu Zegang was named to head the autonomous prefecture, replacing Zhang Dongsheng , who was transferred to be a vice-chairman for the Sichuan People's Congress, according to China Business News. Former Chengdu deputy mayor Zeng Wanming was named mayor of Mianyang, taking over from Tang Limin , who moved to Neijiang city as party chief in April.

The most noticeable appointment was Chen Xinyou , 46, as acting mayor of Deyang. Mr Chen is a former executive of quake-hit turbine maker Dongfang Electric Corp headquartered in Mianzhu, which is administered by Deyang.

The company lost 500 staff to the earthquake and sustained serious damage to production facilities.
