New principal for Baptist affiliate

Will Clem

A high-profile Direct Subsidy Scheme school in Ma On Shan this week appointed a new principal, nine months after the shock resignation of its founding head.

Wil Chan Pui-yan is to take up the post of chief principal at Hong Kong Baptist University Affiliated School Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School from September 1.

Dr Chan is an American-educated teacher-educator who has worked both locally and in the US. He is currently middle school principal at Hong Kong International School, a post he has held since 1998.

In a letter to parents, supervisor Frank Fu Hoo-kin, praised the new principal, saying he hoped Dr Chan would be able to 'move the school forward from strength to strength'.

'Dr Chan has accumulated a wealth of professional knowledge and leadership skills through multi-national experiential work and academic endeavours,' he said.

The school's founding principal, Lilian Chan Lui Ling-yee, sparked controversy last August when she suddenly stepped down days ahead of the start of the school year and the first anniversary of its opening.

Mrs Chan had declined to give any explanation and would only say her leaving was for 'various reasons, some of them personal'.

However, Mrs Chan denied there was any rift between her and the school's sponsoring body, Hong Kong Baptist University.
