While the rest of Hong Kong was digging out from the rain or paddling dragon boats over the weekend, the Aussies in town were out in space. The Australian Association of Hong Kong hosted its annual themed gala and this year it was the 'Intergalactic Convention' at the Grand Hyatt as members enjoyed a close encounter of the Oz kind.

And the expats really got into the spirit of it. In addition to a lot of stormtroopers, Vulcans and Princess Leias, some guests went so far as to have costumes made by Harvash Creations.

One popular get-up that the Harvash folks spent what seemed like a millennium working on were Daleks, the dreaded mechanical enemy of space traveller Doctor Who which appeared throughout the space ball. Among their ranks were Dean White (left), president of the Australian Association, and Gavin McDougall (right), the public affairs director of the Australian consulate. Also spotted in the warped space was one well-known vet who unleashed his dark side spending most of the night as Darth Vader.

However, according to sources, the best kangaroo gossip was that a certain Buzz Lightyear was getting intimate with a Miss Galaxy. Make up your own joke about boldly going where no man has gone.
