31 die while waiting for liver transplants

Thirty-one people with liver disease died in Hong Kong last year while awaiting liver transplants, Secretary for Food and Health York Chow Yat-ngok told the Legislative Council yesterday. At the end of last year there were 126 people waiting for liver transplants and 1,489 waiting for kidney transplants, he said. Hong Kong's organ donation rate is 4.7 per million people, compared with 5.9 in Singapore and 26.6 in the US.
