When art raised smiles of relief

Auction house Bonhams raised HK$1.1 million for Operation Smile's China Medical Mission and its earthquake disaster relief efforts at a spring auction and charity dinner at the Island Shangri-La ballroom.

The dinner, which marked the company's first anniversary in Hong Kong, kicked off with a jewellery preview. In the charity auction, a painting by Sir David Akers-Jones, chairman of the China Medical Mission, was sold for HK$100,000, far above the estimated price.

Enjoying the evening were actor Sean Lau Ching-wan, Pacific Basin Shipping's David Turnbull and art collector Anthony Hardy, plus members of the consular corps including Andrew Seaton, Suphatra Srimaitreephithak and Magda Nasr.
