Secondary school teachers have rushed for places on liberal studies courses in a professional development programme to prepare for sweeping curriculum changes.

More than 1,750 teachers and principals have signed up for 32 seminars and workshops under the teacher update course run by City University from today until June 27.

The courses are designed to help teachers upgrade their skills and prepare for curriculum changes under the '3+3+4' reforms.

Co-ordinator Raymond Chan Wai-man said courses related to liberal studies received the strongest response this year because teachers wanted to prepare for the new academic structure for senior secondary next year when the subject became mandatory.

'We have six seminars on ethical theories and they were the quickest to be fully subscribed among courses this year. Teachers are anxious to learn teaching methods for liberal studies, and ethics is a social sciences subject that can provide them with some knowledge in that respect.'

Mr Chan said there had been only one seminar on ethics in previous years but this year the number was expanded to meet teachers' needs.
