TV chef Kylie Kwong serves up food culture on location in China's regions

Popular television chef Kylie Kwong is in town promoting her new series, My China. The nine-episode Discovery Travel & Living show follows her effort to learn the food culture of various regions of China by travelling to each location.

It was only Kwong's second trip to the mainland but, unlike her first trip in 1998, this time she was prepared.

'In a lot of places, they just shouted at me when I couldn't speak the language,' Kwong recalled from her first visit. 'How I communicated with a lot of people in the show is just pointing and cooking.'

Hong Kong is featured in Episode 2. In addition to publicity, the current stopover allows her to indulge in some of her favourite local eateries again. 'I like spicy but I can only eat it about once a week. The rest of the time I'll have [the milder] Cantonese food,' the Chinese-Australian cook said. 'If I could live anywhere else I would choose Hong Kong. I love it here.'

Of course, her other local vice is to go shopping at Shanghai Tang - whose clothes she constantly wears on camera. Maybe it's time she approached the chain for wardrobe sponsorship.
