Stage set for firms to show their mettle

Human resources directors, business leaders and academics are among the judges of this year's People Management Awards, a collaboration of the South China Morning Post and the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management (HKIHRM).

Judges will choose from participating companies initiatives that have had a positive impact on companies, improving overall performance and transforming the human resources function in the company.

The judging process is in three stages, with stage one the most important as it determines which companies will be major players in the competition.

Entrants will be asked to prove the positive changes that people management initiatives have had on the company and how they improved the overall business performance with a written evaluation of about 1,000 words.

In stage two, short-listed candidates will be granted an access key for an online self-assessment questionnaire, based on specific criterion and evaluated using a five-point rating scale. The assessment will also ask candidates to nominate two customers or stakeholders, for evaluation purposes. This leads to stage three, in which selected candidates are invited to the judging day. Finalists will be asked to reveal the inspiration behind the idea, how it was put into practice, the methods used to achieve success and other factors such as technology and communications.

'Human resources can take part in a company's decision making process,' said Lai Kam-tong, president of the HKIHRM. 'HR needs to think about how it can contribute to the organisation, beyond just managing day to day administration.'
