Animal welfare kit plan for mainland

An animal welfare group is planning to launch a mainland version of its educational kit to promote caring for animals in the country.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals last June launched the Humane Education Package, a 240-page book with lesson plans and basic knowledge about animal welfare.

The kit, now available in English and traditional Chinese, has been given to 1,000 schools in Hong Kong.

The group was now working on a simplified Chinese version to be posted online for mainland schools to use, after mainland animal concern groups and teachers expressed an interest, SPCA education manager Vivian Chiu Ming-ming said.

'Several animal concern groups in Shanghai and Xiamen told me they needed more resources to teach children about animal care,' she said.

They had seen the kit at conferences and asked if a simplified Chinese version could be produced.

Hung Hom Government Primary School has been using the kit in extra-curricular activities since September.

The kit can be found on the SPCA's website: http://www.spca.org.hk/eng/programmes/edu_humane_info.asp
