On style, she rules
Where can I find Ben Nye make-up in Hong Kong? It's theatre make-up but it's got rave reviews at www.makeupalley.com. I'm looking for a product called Final Seal, which purportedly stops make-up from running, even in the summer heat.
Stage Fright, Discovery Bay
The Dictator rules: Go ahead, fuse your make-up to your face. Sounds really healthy. Luckily, you've found a reputable stage make-up brand. Ben Nye's Final Seal make-up sealer is a mint-scented, matte-finish waterproofing spray that's supposed to last for hours. Find it at May's (HK$89; shop 2028, Miramar Shopping Centre, 132 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2369 8789; www.mays.com.hk).
This amazing resource for professional make-up also carries other famous brands worth exploring, such as Kryolan and Mehron. There are also consumer brands to help your make-up stay put.
She Laq by Benefit (HK$290; Seibu, Langham Place, 8 Argyle Street, Mong Kok, tel: 2269 1827), for example, is a clear liquid make-up sealer used for mascara, eye-liner, eye-shadow and lip colour. For more sealers, have a look at brands such as Make Up For Ever, Bare Escentuals and Philosophy.
I really like Barker shoes, from Britain, but cannot find them in Hong Kong. Do you know if a stockist exists?
Barker-ing Mad, Mid-Levels
The Dictator: Why must you all be so difficult? There are many other men's shoe brands made with extraordinary attention to detail and refinements that you probably wouldn't even notice. For example, there's John Lobb (shop G3, the Mandarin Oriental hotel, Central, tel: 2537 2229), Church's (shop 353, Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2918 1091) and J.M. Weston (OC 112, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2525 6368). And that's only the tip of the iceberg. Let us ask you this: how far would you go to get your beloved Barkers? To Britain, where the brand was founded by a Northamptonshire bootmaker in 1880? To Dalian, the only stockist its website (www.barker-shoes.co.uk) lists in China? Forget it. Although Barker shoes were carried by a local department store a few years ago, they're no longer sold in Hong Kong. To order directly from Barker, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
I love the idea of a full skirt, especially to hide my thighs!
I hear they're trendy these days. Any tips?
Flare Practice, The Peak
The Dictator: Watch your step, my dear reader. Adding volume to an already full figure does not exactly have a slimming effect. That is, unless you are accentuating a small waist and trim lower legs. Otherwise, you might as well save your money, throw a tent over yourself and be done with it. (Attention shoppers: that was a joke.) We really like the short taffeta skirts (HK$4,200 to HK$4,550) available in different colours at Miu Miu (shop G07, Lee Gardens Two, 28 Yun Ping Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2882 7143). Moschino has more ladylike versions (HK$3,250 to HK$5,690; shop 201, The Landmark, Central, tel: 2525 4706) with longer hemlines, in mostly neutral colours and bold abstract prints. Classic and flattering, Celine's full skirts (HK$4,450; shop G216, Harbour City, tel: 2175 5988) come in a royal blue or burgundy. If you've got the legs for it, then go ultra mini with French Connection's flared, ruffled skirts (HK$399; shop 119, Pacific Place, tel: 2918 1595) in bright blue or universal black. At a price like that, we recommend buying a few.
