Concierge admits accepting bribes

The chief concierge of the Harbour Plaza Metropolis yesterday admitted conspiring with others to receive bribes from a tailor for referring customers.

Chan Wing-yin, 46, pleaded guilty in Kowloon City Court before Magistrate Andrew Ma Hon-cheung to one charge of conspiring to accept an advantage.

The court heard that Chan had received illicit payments from the proprietor of Baron Kay's Tailor, George Kay Wai-ming, between January 2004 and November 2006.

It heard that the payments were made on about 10 occasions and Chan received envelopes containing cash from Kay or staff of the tailor's shop ranging from several hundred dollars to about HK$1,000. Chan distributed the money to other staff in the concierge department at the hotel, the prosecution says.

It says the scheme began when Chan joined the hotel in December 2003. Kay allegedly asked him to refer hotel guests to his tailor's shop.

Chan was arrested on January 5 last year. He admitted the offence and confessed that he was not allowed by the hotel's management to accept the money.

Sentencing was adjourned to July 14 and Chan was released on bail.

Kay is one of 11 people - suspected of diverting guests to the tailor's shop - who have been charged with bribery in four separate cases, the ICAC said on Monday.
