Tsang to take lawmakers on Sichuan tour

The chief executive will take a team of 20 legislators to Sichuan to witness the devastation wrought by last month's earthquake and the mammoth scale of the reconstruction required.

Asked if members from the pan-democratic parties would be among those invited, Mr Tsang said: 'I hope members from all parties can take part in the delegation.'

A Legco spokesman said president Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai and representatives of all political parties would meet on Monday to discuss who should be included in the delegation of 20.

Speaking after he and his cabinet concluded their one-day visit to Sichuan last night, Donald Tsang Yam-kuen also announced an initiative to invest in and help build public facilities and infrastructure in areas devastated by the quake.

Mr Tsang said the Hong Kong government had been invited by the Sichuan government to build schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centres for the disabled, elderly homes and clinics for children in designated counties.

Hong Kong was also invited to help build roads and bridges, as well as rebuilding the panda conservation centre in Wolong , Mr Tsang said.
