An unemployed Beijing man went on a knife-wielding rampage in a Shanghai police station yesterday, stabbing five officers to death and wounding five others.
The man, surnamed Yang, 28, was seeking revenge after police investigated him last October on suspicion of stealing bicycles, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said.
Despite heightened security because the city is hosting Olympic soccer matches, the man entered the Zhabei district station at 9.40am and stabbed nine officers and a security guard before being overpowered.
In the incident, which state media called a vicious attack by an 'evil-doer', the man started a fire outside one of the gates and stabbed a security guard before entering the building.
A burn mark was still visible on the ground after the rampage.
Shanghai television showed the suspect, a young man with a crew cut and wearing a white T-shirt, answering questions from police.
