Illustrator wants young people to be a picture of confidence

Her trademark cartoon figures may look withdrawn, shy and timid, but illustrator b. wing (Bien Yip Wing) is anything but. Yip may not be the most extroverted girl around, but the Hong Kong artist is quietly assured and confident. Very popular with today's 'MK (Mong Kok) kids' - which is how many are referring to themselves - Yip argues that today's young people may be outwardly expressive but they're actually too restricted by their boxed-up mentality.

'It's hard to open up to your parents and tell them that you want to be a chef or an artist in Hong Kong,' Yip lamented. 'I remember when I first told people that I wanted to be an artist, their first impression was like 'Ha, what the heck is she doing'?'

An exhibition of about 20 pieces of her work from last year opens tomorrow at LCX Causeway Bay (9 Kingston Street). 'I want to tell people if they just believe in themselves, they can achieve whatever they want in whatever field they are in. All of life's roads are open.'

The exhibition will surely be another hit with fans, especially since every visitor will be given a limited-edition b. wing card, with a space left vacant for them to leave a message 'from the bottom of their heart'.

Yip explained that organisers originally suggested they write just love messages, but she scoffed and said: 'It's not Valentine's Day and I am no queen of love.' The exhibition continues until August 4.
