Pan-democratic lawmakers are still hoping to see Vice-President Xi Jinping when he visits Hong Kong for the first time tomorrow.

The democrats wrote an open letter yesterday to Mr Xi urging direct dialogue with him to discuss Hongkongers' views on political development and the return of home-return permits to those who have been denied entry to the mainland.

Mr Xi, who became the vice-president in March, will make his first visit to Hong Kong from tomorrow until Tuesday.

Lawmakers have received invitations to attend a welcoming dinner for Mr Xi on Monday. The camp's legislators said they had yet to hear of any possible meetings with Mr Xi, adding that the dinner might be the only occasion at which to meet the vicepresident.

Still, some lawmakers hoped to have a meeting with Mr Xi, who takes care of Hong Kong affairs.

The Civic Party's Ronny Tong Ka-wah said Mr Xi might meet representatives of all sectors but not the legislature. 'Still, I hope there will be breakthroughs as Mr Xi is a new leader. I wish to have dialogue with him as soon as possible,' he said.

Independent lawmaker Joseph Lee Kok-long was hopeful, pointing to the way the central government had handled the Sichuan earthquake.
