Piano prodigy brings home another trophy

A previous winner of the Ettlingen International Competition for Young Pianists, 12-year-old Aristo Sham Ching-toa, has won another international award - first prize in the 2008 Gina Bachauer International Junior Piano Competition.

The competition gathered 33 young pianists aged 11 to 13 from around the world to demonstrate their talents in Salt Lake City in the United States from June 16 to June 21. Aristo's impressive performance of Beethoven's Concerto No1 in C Major won him the title.

Aristo's piano teacher Eleanor Wong said she was glad he won such an important international competition.

'Winning this award was much harder than winning in Germany two years ago. Aristo had to prepare a one-hour programme which was three times longer than for the German competition,' she said.

Aristo was delighted. 'I would give myself nine of out 10 marks,' he said. He attributed his success to Professor Wong's teaching and support.
