Meagre rise in hourly shop wages

Peter So

Hourly wages for shop staff have increased HK$1.54 over the past decade, a poll has found. The average wage at 93 shops covered in the survey was HK$22.72 an hour. Workers at 7-Eleven stores were the lowest paid, at HK$21 an hour. The survey organisers, the People's Alliance for a Minimum Wage, urged legislators to pass a law guaranteeing an hourly pay of least HK$30.
