Giving up soft drinks

I have been trying my best to quit the habit of drinking too many soft drinks.

I got the idea after I read a newspaper article about the nutritional content of these drinks. I was astonished. I didn't realise they contain so much sugar! I was determined to stop drinking them immediately.

Wondering how something so enjoyable could be so unhealthy, I realised something. Things are not always as simple as they look.

Thank you for your letter. Firstly, well done on deciding to give up soft drinks - they are packed with sugar, additives and preservatives which rot your teeth and do nothing for your health. Reach for a glass of water, fruit or vegetable juice, or herbal tea instead to quench your thirst.

Your other point is a good one: things are not always as they seem.

This is true in so many areas of life. We may think we understand a person or situation from the way it looks, but until we get to know what's under the surface, we can't know its true essence.

There is a famous saying: 'Never judge a book by its cover'. This means that we should not make up our mind about something or someone just by looking. We don't know what's on the inside until we open it up.

Find out about a person or situation before you decide how you feel about it. Appearances can be deceptive, so don't be fooled.
