Judge jails 'shameful' mother

A 'shameful' mother who helped her live-in partner molest her teenage daughter was jailed for 21 months yesterday after a judge rejected her claims that she believed the assaults had healing powers.

District Court Deputy Judge Anthony Kwok Kai-on lashed out at the mother, 45, who he said had blindfolded and forced her naked daughter, then 15, to succumb to the man's touches, making her the victim of their immoral relationship.

The jobless mother, who is married to a man living in the mainland, has cohabitated for more than 10 years with her unemployed partner Chan Kong-sang, 52, who was jailed for 30 months yesterday.

The couple earlier pleaded guilty to three indecent-assault charges arising from the assaults.

'As a woman, particularly when you are a mother, there is no way you could not have felt what your daughter went through at the time,' the judge said while sentencing the woman, whom he called shameful.

'You have sacrificed your daughter to accept the molestations from a man before your very eyes. What kind of mother are you?'

The judge did not believe that the Hong Kong-born housewife with secondary education was so stupid, superstitious or ignorant as to believe that the molestation of her daughter, which occurred last July and August, would inject light into her body to heal her asthma or irregularities in her menstrual cycle.

The daughter now is under the care of the Po Leung Kuk.
