Decision has yet to be made on who will lead out the 34-member team at the opening ceremony

After receiving the Hong Kong flag and words of encouragement from Chief Executive Donald Tsang Yam-kuen, members of the city's Olympic squad spoke of their excitement and determination last week.

From August 8 to 24, the 34 members of the Hong Kong team will take part in 11 events: swimming, athletics, cycling, badminton, equestrianism, fencing, rowing, windsurfing, shooting, table tennis and triathlon.

'I think we have put together a strong squad. I'm satisfied with its high quality. There are real medal hopes in a number of events, such as table tennis, badminton and windsurfing,' said Hong Kong Olympics official Pang Chung.

Four years ago, 32 athletes travelled to Athens to compete in 10 sports, with Li Ching and Ko Lai-chak winning a silver medal in the table tennis men's doubles.

Although the doubles has been replaced by a team event this year, table tennis is still a Hong Kong favourite. Li and Ko, together with teammate Cheung Yuk, have been undergoing training on the mainland with top players in preparation for the Games.

Windsurfers Chan King-yin and Vicky Chan Wai-kei have returned from training in Qingdao, aiming to maintain their good condition for next month.
